I studied Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and New College, Oxford. During this time I worked primarily in the life room from the human figure which provided a sound foundation for the looser, more painterly pictures of swimmers that are now a major part of my portfolio.
On leaving the Ruskin I studied for a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in Liverpool and went on to teach at Marlborough College. This was followed by a period teaching in community education before establishing my own classes.
My subjects are taken from the things I enjoy. Swimming in open water and working with plants provide ideas for paintings and drawings that aim to capture something of the experience of the activity or the spirit of the subject.
For drawing I work mainly in charcoal, pencil and graphite. I sometimes use monoprint as a forerunner to paintings that I develop in acrylic or watercolour. Many works are mixed media and include collage and pastel.
